Joel Schlessinger MD shares firework safety tips for the holiday weekend
Fireworks are a highlight of summer. Without proper safety precautions, however, fireworks can cause some serious damage.  Last year, 62 percent of all firework-related injuries were burns, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. To avoid injury, follow these safety tips:

  • Wear protective eyewear and never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Never allow children to play with fireworks without adult supervision.
  • Avoid standing directly over fireworks when lighting the fuse and back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting the device.
  • Do not pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully and only light one item at a time.
  • Always keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or injury.
  • Do not ignite fireworks while holding them in your hand.
  • Douse used fireworks with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding them.

Following these tips will help prevent burns and other injuries.

Keep a first aid kit on hand in case of burns, says Joel Schlessinger MD.

A minor burn is red, painful and sometimes can result in a blister. To treat a minor burn, hold the affected area under cold, running water for at least 10 minutes. Once it is cool, cover the burn with a sterile bandage.

If you suffer from a large or severe burn, it’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Severe burns are deep and don’t hurt as much as minor burns due to damaged nerves. Immediately treat severe burns by holding the affected area under cold, running water for at least 10 minutes, then seek medical attention.

Joel Schlessinger MD recommends skin care products to help the healing process.

After seeking medical treatment, Joel Schlessinger MD recommends using advanced skin care products to aid in the healing process.

FixMySkin Healing Balm with 1% Hydrocortisone is designed to soothe, moisturize and heal compromised skin. The hydrocortisone in this balm will treat inflammation while shea butter and cocoa butter provide much-needed hydration. To prevent scarring, apply an ointment that will keep the area hydrated. Elta Hydrovase Wound Dressing Gel is ideal for keeping wounds moist to speed up the healing process. Its hydrating formula also prevents tissue buildup that can cause scarring, itching and irritation. For those with sensitive skin, Vaniply Ointment prevents water loss with a gentle formula that is free of harsh ingredients. If scarring occurs, apply a treatment gel like SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel with Centelline™ to soften and smooth these marks.
