Shaving daily does not have to be a painful experience, according to Joel Schlessinger MD.

While shaving every day can help create a soft and smooth complexion, it can also take a toll on your skin. Irritation, ingrown hairs, razor burn, itching and redness can make shaving a painful and aggravating experience. By following the simple steps that Joel Schlessinger MD outlines in the presentation, you can avoid these hassles. Taking the time to prepare and repair your complexion before and after shaving can diminish irritation and help you maintain a soft and smooth complexion for hours.

Pay attention to the products you use before, during and after shaving, says Joel Schlessinger MD.

Before shaving, you should exfoliate your complexion. This eliminates dirt, oil, debris and dead skin cells that get in the way of the razor and cause irritation. Exfoliation also prevents hairs from becoming trapped beneath the skin’s surface and causing painful ingrown hairs. Try a product such as Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub.

Use a soothing shaving cream such as Turo Skin Multi-Active Shave, which contains anti-inflammatory ingredients to prevent redness. Joel Schlessinger MD also suggests shaving with the grain of hair to cut down on razor burn.

After you have finished shaving, apply a soothing product such as Dermalogica Post-Shave Balm. This lotion replaces lost moisture for a complexion that stays soft and smooth longer.

Joel Schlessinger MD also recommends a shaving kit that contains all of your necessities.

For everything you need to shave comfortably, try a kit such as The Art of Shaving™ 4 Elements Kit. This set contains a pre-shave oil, shaving cream, post-shave balm and badger hair brush. Together, these products prep and soothe the complexion for a close and comfy shave.
