What is dandruff and how do I know if I have this condition? Joel Schlessinger MD explains.

Dandruff is one of the most common skin conditions affecting women, men and children of all ages. While this condition is not considered harmful or dangerous, the symptoms can be irritating and embarrassing for many people. In this presentation, Joel Schlessinger MD explains what causes dandruff and what you can do to relieve your symptoms.

Dry, white flakes on the scalp are the most common symptom of dandruff, says Joel Schlessinger MD.

This condition causes skin cells on the scalp to shed rapidly. These cells fall off and appear as white, dry flakes that are visible on the scalp and hair. The amount of flakes and the severity of shedding depends on the individual case, however, it can be aggravated by itching and scratching.

Contrary to popular belief, dandruff is caused by the condition of an individual’s skin rather than their hair type. There are several causes of dandruff including sensitivity, dry skin and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff is usually associated with scalp irritation, itching or sensitivity to products.

Joel Schlessinger MD reveals several options for treating symptoms of dandruff.

Cleansing your scalp with a nourishing and hydrating shampoo such as PHYTO Phytheol Intense Anti-Dandruff Treatment Shampoo can relieve itching and irritation caused by dandruff. You can also use purifying shampoos such as Derma Topix Zolidyne Shampoo or Derma Topix Tar Shampoo to eliminate flakes and soothe dryness.

Another way to treat dandruff is by using a scalp treatment such as René Furterer COMPLEXE 5 Regenerating Plant Extract. The essential oils in this product deeply nourish the skin to quickly relieve itching and flaking.
