Waxing is becoming a common choice for hair removal, says Joel Schlessinger MD.

Men and women are constantly searching for new and effective ways to remove unwanted hair. From shaving to laser hair removal and plucking, consumers can try numerous options before they find one they like. Many individuals are turning to waxing for results that last longer than traditional shaving. In this presentation, Joel Schlessinger MD offers advice, tips and tricks to get the most out of your waxing experience.

Waxing is a procedure that removes the entire hair follicle beneath the surface of the skin for results that generally last three to six weeks. Waxing can be performed on the legs, bikini area, underarms, chest, back, eyebrows and upper lip.

It is important to take precautions before undergoing a waxing procedure, warns Joel Schlessinger MD.

Because the wax adheres partly to the skin during this procedure, it is important that your skin is in good condition when you treat the area. A few weeks before the procedure, discontinue using powerful products such as Retin-A or retinol. These products weaken and thin the skin, making you more susceptible to damage.

Before the procedure, allow hair to grow until it is approximately 1/8 inch long. You should also gently cleanse and exfoliate the area to prevent ingrown hairs and irritation.

Joel Schlessinger MD recommends his favorite waxing kits and soothing products.

bliss features a line of at-home waxing supplies such as bliss Poetic Waxing Kit that allows you to remove unwanted hair anywhere from your face or body. This line also features easy-to-use bliss Poetic Waxing Strips for Body and Face for on-the-go hair removal.

Waxing can cause irritation so Joel Schlessinger MD recommends FixMySkin Healing Body Balm Unscented with 1% Hydrocortisone. This product heals itching, dry and irritated skin following your procedure.
