Blackheads are an extremely common skin concern, says Dr. Joel Schlessinger.

Chances are if you’ve ever dealt with acne, you’ve also wrestled with blackheads and whiteheads. These bumps create an uneven tone and texture and can be difficult to remove. In this presentation, Dr. Joel Schlessinger offers tips and tricks for getting rid of these blemishes.

Individuals with oily, acne-prone skin frequently experience blackheads, or comedones, however, anyone can develop this issue. These tiny bumps appear dark or black in color and are often seen on the nose, chin and forehead but can also appear on the neck, chest, back and shoulders.

According to Dr. Joel Schlessinger, clogged pores often result in blackheads.

Contrary to popular belief, blackheads are not simply dirt within the pores. Comedones occur when pores become clogged with oil, bacteria, debris and dead skin cells. Certain comedones that remain below the skin’s surface are known as whiteheads and other comedones that are above the surface are called blackheads. This is because when the pore is exposed to air, it causes the debris to change color and darken. Clogged pores can also cause an overproduction of oil, leaving a complexion that appears dull and sluggish.

There are several options available for treating blackheads, explains Dr. Joel Schlessinger.

Exfoliation is key to dealing with both whiteheads and blackheads. Physical and chemical scrubs remove dead skin cells that allow debris to become trapped within pores. Treatments such as microdermabrasion and rejuvenating facials can also unclog pores and encourage cell renewal to create a clear complexion.

Certain products such as FixMySkin Acne Care provide daily exfoliation to help eliminate blackheads and whiteheads. You can also use products that absorb excess oil while they exfoliate such as La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo. For more products that address these issues, visit
