While on vacation, Joel Schlessinger MD always remembers to follow important skin care tips.

During a recent trip to Denali, Alaska, Joel Schlessinger MD was able to spend time hiking Mt. McKinley, one of the highest mountain peaks in North America. While enjoying his vacation, he also took the time to remind his patients about the importance of sun protection, especially at high altitudes.

In this video, Joel Schlessinger MD highlights some of his favorite products to use while on vacation to protect against UV and other types of skin damage.

Higher altitudes often lead to more sun exposure, explains Joel Schlessinger MD.

Even in areas with cooler temperatures such as Alaska, there is still a risk of sun exposure, especially at higher elevations. Mountainous areas often have less cloud coverage so the skin is exposed to a large amount of direct UVA and UVB rays. Areas with snow also increase the risk of sun exposure because the snow reflects the damaging light rays.

When you are spending time in areas of higher altitudes, Joel Schlessinger MD recommends applying either a physical or mineral broad spectrum sunscreen to defend against damage. One of his top choices is EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 Very Light Broad Spectrum Sunscreen, a lightweight sunscreen that is gentle enough for sensitive skin. You should also wear protective clothing and a hat to provide complete coverage.

Bug bites, rashes and allergic reactions can be a concern while you’re on vacation. To soothe these irritations, Joel Schlessinger MD recommends FixMySkin Healing Body Balm Unscented with 1% Hydrocortisone. You can take this portable stick with you anywhere you go to heal minor skin irritations quickly and effectively.
